What You Need to Start Candle Making

October 30th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

It’s easy to see why lots of people would want to start making their own candles. Finding out the information you need to start making them is a bit more tricky however. You will often find that despite there being many craft supply selling candle making supplies, they often will not be of the highest quality or the selection might be very limited. Many people who make candles on a regular basis feel that it’s best to buy from a specialist store that you can find on the internet.  Then you can get candle making.

After you have done some reading on the subject, decided what type of candle appeals to you to make, and have an idea as to how you are going to go about making them, it is time to purchase your supplies. Just be careful that you only buy what you truly require.

Be aware that Once you start making candles and become more practiced you will start to make adjustments in the techniques you use. Despite the fact that you are able save a lot of money by purchasing in bulk quantities, it’s a better idea to buy smaller amounts whilst you are still a beginner. It doesn’t make much sense to purchase fifty pounds of something that ends up not working to your satisfaction.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most of the online candle supply retailers do not require a minimum purchase. Because of this, you do not have to be limited to just one supplier. You may find better prices or widely different offerings from one supplier to another. Suppliers closer to you may save you substantial money on shipping so see what you can buy close to home when possible.

Finally, as holds true in so many areas, cheaper is not always better. When it comes to candle making, you pay for quality.  You will appreciate this once you start candle making.

Container growing tomatoes for small gardens

October 29th, 2008, Posted in Home

Because I have a small garden I prefer to plant my tomatoes in containers and pots and place them in sunny locations. Container growing tomatoes will grow just as well as those grown in the main garden but you need to do a couple of things a bit differently to have good success.

Container growing tomatoes

Some types grow better in pots and tubs than others. Some varieties have such large fruits that this makes them unsuitable for growing in pots and containers. If you have ever grown tomatoes you now how much the y need feeding and watering. only marrows and pumkins come close. The large varieties need a larger root system to sustain the plants long enough and well enough to give you the large tomatoes you would want.

Good types that grow in pots include the small cherry types and the medium ones.Do not grown the very large italian steak tomatoes.

The second thing you must do is to use only your largest containers and pots for tomatoes. Your plants need regular watering and feeding and to get really good plants the roots need plenty of space. If they are pot bound you will reduce the size of your tomatoes.

The third thing to do with them is to feed them weekly once the first flower set appears. I do this every Sunday morning without fail until the last fruits are present. Then you just continue with water. I use special tomato feed from a garden centre. I also use this on sweet peppers and cucumbers.

Growing tomatoes in pots

The final thing to do is to water at least once a day. Even if it rains I still water them because the pots dry out so quickly and the leaves of the plants deflect the water from the container. The ones in the ground will grow much more easily. Container growing tomatoes for small gardens work very well as long as you follow these simple tips.

Sports Collecting is a Rewarding Hobby

October 28th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

Sports collecting is a hobby that can fill your time with interest and offer a diversion to your everyday life. A sports collecting hobby is a relaxing and rewarding pastime. Sports collecting takes many forms depending on the person who is pursuing the hobby. Many people choose to collect memorabilia from their favorite professional teams, but others collect items related to a specific sport such as golf, fishing, and other recreational sports. Sports collectors have to be able to improvise ways of storing their items, especially since some sports items occupy quite an amount of space.

If you have a favorite pro team or two there are many items you can collect related to those teams. Scrapbooking is great for collectors. For instance, you can create scrapbooks in which you save clippings about exciting games, favorite players, and special interviews. You can keep ticket stubs and photographs in your scrapbook. Other items, however, won’t fit into a scrapbook, such as a game ball, team jersey, or a team’s annual yearbook. These items will need other storage. Stands make great storage for special balls, as do hanging jerseys on a wall hanger.

You might like to collect souvenir items from all types of sports. Small metal pins with insignias on them are sold by many professional teams. One type of sports collecting that is very popular is collecting pins, such as those sold at the Olympics. Another option for sports collecting is to collect antique sports equipment. Vintage baseball gloves are an example of this type of collectible.

Among the most collectible items are sports cards. Sports collecting enthusiasts have collected sporting cards for years and the first were the baseball cards. This is such a popular hobby that some cards are worth a lot of money, such as a rookie card of a player.

People who play a particular sport themselves usually want to collect items that symbolize this sport in their own homes and offices. Collecting items decorated with fish, horses, or golfers are examples of these types of collections. If you enjoy hunting with dogs you may decide to decorate your home in a hunting dog theme.

The same can be done around the theme of golf, horseback riding, whether western or eastern, bass fishing, sailboats, and other popular recreation sports. Sports can be more than a physical activity, it can also be a collector’s hobby.

Sports collecting is one of those profitable hobbies that anyone can develop simply and easily, as well as reap financial rewards if they so desire.

Creative and a Pack Rat? Make Your Own Classic Movie Poster

October 26th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

When unpacking in my new apartment, I realized that I do not like to throw anything out. Old newspapers, magazines and postcards are all included. I decided that instead of decorating my walls with prints, I would make my own classic movie poster. It’s an excellent way to clean out the clutter in your house, as well as a way to show your creativity.

Anything Goes When Making a Classic Movie Poster

There are lots of different ways one could make a classic movie poster. At Chicago’s Halsted Market Days, a local artist was framing record album covers using soundtracks of films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s or An American in Paris. Because it’s very inexpensive and easy to do, this is a great way to make a classic movie poster. Go to the local used record shop where you can buy records for less than $5. For less than $30, you can buy an inexpensive, but nice-looking frame at a drugstore.

Another way of making a classic movie poster that involves actual work is making a collage. A collage is a great way to get rid of a lot of old magazines and newspapers. Because most of the material you already have at home, this is again, a very inexpensive project. You’ll only have to buy a poster board and a frame. You could also use covers from VHS tapes, DVD’s or CD’s, along with magazines and newspapers clippings.

Use Your Imagination, but Remember People Have to Look at it

The only “danger” in making a classic movie poster on your own is that it might end up looking like a kindergartner’s art project from school. While beauty is subjective, and in the end, you have to put together what you like, there are tips for making your poster presentable and tasteful.

Having a theme is a great start. This theme could be a color scheme – using only black & white photographs will give the poster an old Hollywood glamour feel. You can also concentrate on one star, or even better have some sort of general theme in mind. My poster featured film stars of the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Another good idea would be to have shots of famous pairs – Bogie and Bacall, Spencer and Hepburn, Fred and Ginger. You can also have a classic movie poster featuring famous screen clowns like Charlie Chaplin, Abbot and Costello, or Laurel and Hardy.

Reflecting your taste and what you believe to be classic film is the most important thing to remember when making this poster. As long as you put your creativity into it, any movie poster will look like a classic and don’t be worried if your poster reflects Shaft more than it does Casablanca.

Making your own classic movie poster is an excellent way to clean out the clutter in your house, as well as a way to show your creativity…View more articles at www.posters.jsgenterprises.com.

How Finding The Suitable Baby Boy Clothes Can Be Fun And Exciting

October 26th, 2008, Posted in Babies

For mothers-to-be and the people who love babies, one of the most fun and exciting activities can be shopping for adorable baby clothes.  Browsing through the cute designs for the perfect outfit is diverting.  Whether you are looking for designer labels or quirky one of a kind outfits, choosing baby boy clothes is a great way to spend time.

Many parents buy stereotypical clothing for their sons, and stick with blue color palates. It can be fun to experiment with varied color choices, so long as you do not dress the child up in all of them at once.

There is so a lot versatility in baby boy clothes. Some designers have original and imaginative lines of children’s clothing, featuring bright primary colors and cute shapes.  Baby clothing is also very versatile, so you can combine many different sweaters, jackets, and shirts.

Baby Boy Clothes Examples

With so many fabric colors and blends available, baby clothing for your son can be showy, comfortable, or both at once.  There are an infinite number of cute outfits that can be purchased, which will be both adorable and comfortable for your baby.Nearly all parents find their baby clothes separated into two distinct categories.  The first category is the baby’s dress clothing — nice outfits that can be word to special events, church, parties, or other places where they will be photographs.  When they want to show off just how precious their child is, these are the clothes they will fit him in.

However, there is often a much larger section of the baby’s wardrobe that is devoted to comfortable, casual play clothes.  Baby boy clothes will frequently get dirty, and parents need comfortable cotton outfits that are low maintenance.  These items need to be sturdy and washable.  Shopping around allows the parents to buy enough of each items so that they don’t have to worry about doing laundry every day.  Learning to layer clothing for a variety of weather conditions is an important step, as is checking for sensitivities to different fabrics and detergents.

Baby Growth Spurts

It is amazing how quickly a newborn baby will grow.  Baby boy clothes purchased just a month prior may no longer fit.  Different companies may size their garments differently, so it can be a challenge to by enough of the right size items.  Your baby may grow so quickly that you forget to try on some of your cute items before they have outgrown them. This is why discovering to shop smart and save money is important.  You will be replacing those clothes before you know it.

Quirky Baby Boy Clothes

If your youngsters are dressed in unusual or stylish baby boy clothes, they will be that much more amusing to guests.  Since parents need to find bargains in this economy, it is important to find items that are both reasonably priced and fashionable.  T-shirts with adorable sayings are always a hit with friends and family.  They can also generally be found at great prices.

How To Create Your Own Funky Necklace

October 25th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

Did you ever consider making your own personalised jewellery. Perhaps you played with beads when you were younger but have never touched them since. The easiest jewelry to create is probably a necklace and with some
ingenuity can look either funky or elegant and appropriate in both cases to the rest of the outfit you are wearing.

First let us decide what to make the necklace from. Semiprecious stones are a good choice such as jade, amber or other semiprecious jewels already polished and with holes in them ready to string. Or you can start from scratch. If you live near the sea, or go on holiday there, you can go beachcombing and look for stones, it is amazing what you can find, although you are unlikely to find anything truly valuable. However, don’t think about value, it’s about looks that complement your outfit.

Next, polish your stones. This can be time consuming. You start with an abrasive  to get the basic shape and take the roughness off and gradually polish with softer abrasives and cloths until you finally get the finish you want. It does not pay to hurry this process, the more care you take, the better the final jewel will be.

Now you need to drill your stones in order to string them together.  There are many tools out there you may use - the most obvious one being the miniature drills used by model makers. Line your beads up before drilling them so that you know exactly where to drill and again take care. Having invested all the time and effort into polishing your stones, it would be foolish to break or scratch them at this stage.

Stringing your beads is the next step. The best thing to use for this is jewellers thread, although other threads could also be employed. Be careful, though, sewing cotton and the like will be too soft and will break and fishing line is to hard and may cut its way through your beads - and your neck if you are not careful. Ensure that you have the beads ordered as you want them before tying the thread. You can place them a number of times before finishing the knot, but once that knot is tied it will be difficult to change without starting over with a new piece of thread.

By taking your time, and being creative it is possible to make some really personalised articles of jewellery. I know somebody who pierced orange pips to make a necklace - it looks great. Try carving and polishing small pieces of coal, it looks just like jet, with little or no cost. It won’t last long, but jewellery like this is not meant to last forever.

Learn to Knit

October 25th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

Knitting

If you want to make use of your time and start a new hobby, then one of the best hobbies to learn is knitting. This hobby is particularly useful if you have a large family and want to discover ways to save money on clothing and other accessories. The art of knitting is also a good way to relieving stress and this can even give one a sense of accomplishment as soon as they are able to create products they normally see in the shops. Read on and discover the places where you can find the best resources for your knitting project.

One of the best sources for helping you to learn to knit is www.hobbynetworksite.com. You’ll get step by step instructions on how to tie knots, as well as how to find the right yarn to help you do the job. You’ll need to start by choosing the type of yarn you want to use; types include worsted weight, chunky, and bulky, and it will take a different kind of yarn to complete different projects, so be sure to read the directions on the package carefully. The site will also teach you how to select the right needles and crochet hooks, so that you’ll know how to manipulate the yarn in order to create the type of stitches you want.

Looking through a knitting related blog is also a great place to learn to knit. If you want to learn more about how to knit for the many charities that may be in your area, or if you’ve been practicing your skills and want to know where you can sell your new creations, you may want to check out sources like The Daily Knitter to find out how you can become better at knitting. You can also get links to clubs in your area that are made up of people who share the same interests. There are also a number of community calendars and blogs on the site that will help to point in the right direction.

There are many tools you need when learning to knit and one of them is the gauge card. The gauge card will assist you in manipulating the needle through the yarn, and this will help get your hands familiar to creating the various patterns that you want to make. These gauges can be made from with metal or plastic, and they can be used to determine the needle sizes that you will need to use for each project due to the fact the needles tend to get worn out and their sizes change with continued use. The use of gauges also help you find the needles that feel most comfortable in your hands as you are learning to knit. Sometimes, you may find that the aluminum or metal needles which are very commonly used are not ideal for you. This way you can discover that perhaps a walnut needle, a bamboo or plastic needle may be more suited for you.
