How to Survive Feeding a Toddler

April 25th, 2009, Posted in Babies

Parenting is harder than climbing Mount Everest!  Before you have your first child there are so many things to think about; the pregnancy, the labour, the birth, nappies.  The whole thing is very daunting.  Unfortunately it does not get easier, but you do, however, get better and better at coping.

Feeding starts almost from the first contact you have with your child.  If you are breastfeeding, then many hospitals will encourage breast feeding as first contact between mum and baby. For many new parents this is quite straightforward, others have to work a good deal harder at mastering breast feeding, but whichever your route you feel pleased when they are happily feeding.

A couple of the areas which make parents smile, when they go well, are sleeping and feeding.  So having mastered breast feeding, or bottle, what happens when solids are introduced?  There are many books written to help you understand feeding a toddler, but do you really need any of these?

There are a couple of way to start feeding your toddler.  The most common route, especially for first babies is to puree foods until the parents feel that the child is ready to progress. Many second kids are not given this luxury and are simply offered what ever is going on their elder sibling’s plate.  This has now been named ‘baby led weaning’ and has become a popular way to start feeding a toddler.

Many parents will tell you that there first child was a difficult eater, and it was such a joy when their second child took to food fabulously and ate everything.  Could this be because it was presented in a more appealing way and with less trepidation?  Before weaning their first child most parents go on a baby weaning course, read far too many books and speak to other parents to find out tit bits.  With subsequent children there is no time for courses and books, it is not that parents know everything after one child, they simply better understand what is important and how to manage their own nerves.  Or they have realized that feeding a toddler should not be a nerve wracking experience, but a pleasure.

If you want to try feeding a toddler with out the puree food then have a go.  Many parents will look sideways at you, but over time you will realize that your child can feed themselves before children given puree, and they will understand about chewing and they will learn not to put so much in their mouths that they can’t chew.  Feeding a toddler is about teaching you child these important things, it is not just about getting different tastes and textures into them successfully.  Perhaps we should not be taught about ‘feeding a toddler’, perhaps it should be renames ‘teaching a toddler to feed’ and then we may all get there a little quicker.

Spotting the Signs of Baby Teething

April 17th, 2009, Posted in Babies

Babies can be pretty fussy when they’re teething. The bad news is that they seem to be perpetually teething in the first two years or so. This makes it difficult to tell whether your child has a new tooth coming in or whether something else is wrong. Here are few things to look for to help you figure out if a tooth is getting ready to show itself.

If your baby seems like he or she is getting a cold, it might in fact be teething. When the teeth come in, they sometimes put pressure on the baby’s sinuses or ear canals. This can cause cold symptoms to occur. These symptoms can be as mild as a runny nose or as extreme as a full blown ear infection.

You might be surprised to realize that ear infections are a sign of baby teething. Sometimes a baby will develop this painful condition because the emerging teeth are placing pressure on the ear canal. Then fluid backs up and gets infected. You’ll need to deal with an ear infection immediately in order to avoid damage to the baby’s hearing.

Likewise, your child may develop a fever during the teething process. However, you should be aware that normal teething will not result in a high fever. Never ignore a high fever in an infant. There’s a risk that he or she has an ear or sinus infection. You’ll need to take your baby to its pediatrician to be examined and see if a prescription is in order.

When your little one is teething, there will be several other symptoms you can look for. For example, red cheeks usually accompany this process. You might notice that one cheek is red and the other is normal; chances are the new tooth will emerge on the side that’s red.

Excessive drooling is one more symptom of teething. Babies are always drooling anyway, but when they’re teething it becomes extreme. The drooling might be so excessive that you have to change your baby’s outfits all the time due to dampness.

Teething can also be the explanation for unexplained, sustained periods of crying and misery. One of the worst symptoms of teething is excessive crying. And this will typically lead to sleep problems as well. These behaviors can be very hard on both of you.

Most people who offer you baby advice will suggest that you give your child some pain reliever to ease the symptoms. However, discuss the situation with your doctor before administering any medications, even over the counter ones.

Valuable Guidelines For Selecting The Perfect Baby Gifts

April 16th, 2009, Posted in Babies

When it comes time to give a baby gift many people rush out to buy what is cute. All too often these gifts are far from practical. Most new parents really need items that are useable. Finding a unique baby gift can be really challenging. It is even more difficult if the parents have not registered for gifts.

When buying a new baby a toy safety and education should be your main concerns. Most of the time babies are most drawn to simple toys like colorful soft blocks are stackable cups. Try and stay away from expensive toys with lots of complicated parts or electronics. Do not buy a baby a toy that has small parts that could break off and become a choking hazard. You should also steer away from any pull toy with a long cord that could get wrapped around the baby’s neck.

While so many of the frilly little outfits are adorable you probably want to stick with more simple clothing. Babies tend to wear fancy outfits only occasionally for pictures. When buying clothing it is best to buy things one size larger than the baby will initially wear. When doing this consider the season it will be when the baby is likely to wear them. Most of the time parents needs more every day clothing for their baby. Simple but cute items such as pajamas, playsuits, and onesies will be used all the time.

When buying accessories think about things the parents are likely to need lots of like burp clothes and blankets. Everything you buy should feel good on your skin and be easily cleaned. Nursing pillows like the Boppy are great because they can be used many different ways as the baby grows. While they are not fancy diapers and wipes will almost surely be most welcomed by the parents to be. When buying baby gifts remember that babies will spend most of their time eating, sleeping, and pooping. A gift that makes any of these three gifts easier is a great idea. Why Stimulating Your Infant’s Intellect Is Key

April 7th, 2009, Posted in Babies

It is absolutely critical that you start to stimulate your child’s mind as early as possible when you consider that 75% of your infant’s intellectual growth occurs before the age 6. With babies, everything around them is extremely influential on their developing mind - sights, sounds, smells, and touches.  No matter what their age, these early influences and inputs will help your child to learn and grow.  Considering this, it is extremely important for any parent to create a stimulating environment for their child.  A few ways to stimulate your newborn’s intellect are as follows.

1. Supply them enough to look at.
Stimulate your child’s visual sense by surrounding them with color. Place them in a play yard like the Graco Playard so they’ll be surrounded by different colors and shapes for them to look at. Hang a mobile above their playpen or hang colored shapes on the wall.  You might also want to hang a baby-safe mirror on the wall so your baby can recognize themselves.  Whatever you can add to spice up the visual excitement of your child’s world - the more the better.

2. Provide lots to listen to.
It is a well-known fact that babies respond to music, even when in the womb - you can play music for them as soon as you’d like.  Play a CD of nature sounds for your infant - whistling wind, rainforest sounds, or rain showers - anything to stimulate your infant’s sense of hearing. There is no more beautiful voice on earth to your baby than Mommy’s voice - infants love to be sung to. Also, make sure you allow your newborn to make their own sounds and noises - encourage them to play with rattles or musical toys.  Teach them how to clap. The more they explore their own sounds, the more they learn.

3. Give them enough to touch.
Make sure your newborn has plenty of room to crawl or roll around in - you might want to consider a larger size play pen, like the Graco Pack n Playard, which gives them enough room to explore the world around them. Play hand games with your infant - paddycake is always a favorite. Bounce and dance with your newborn in your arms or your lap, really involve them in your motion. Let them touch and explore different textures. Different fabrics or toys with different surfaces, for example the toys in the Graco Pack n Playard provide many different textures for your baby to touch. The more you allow your infant to touch and feel the world around them, the greater the intellectual stimulation and the greater the learning.

Your newborn’s intellectual stimulation is one of the most important aspects of their development. Giving your child an environment to safely learn and explore the world around them is one of your key jobs as a parent. Provide a world full of color for your baby. Give your child the gift of stimulating and soothing sounds of music.  Give your child many things to touch - all the different textures and surfaces you can find.  All of these things are be very influential on your baby and on their mind.

Understanding Child Safety

April 6th, 2009, Posted in Babies

Okay so protecting your child is something you think about some. Well maybe you think about safety a little or maybe you think about it a lot. Either way what is it that you are wanting to protect your child from? Are you protecting them from death? If so why? Is there something wrong with a child dying? Or are you protecting yourself from the pain of losing your child? These are deep thoughts to consider. For some reason most people seem to think children should live longer then their parents; but why? Well no matter the reason most people seek to make things safe for their children.

Have you ever wondered if we get our safety priorities correct? You may focus a lot of time in one or two areas endeavoring to protect your child only to discover that there are others areas in life where you have completely missed the boat and left your child unprotected.

Most of us realize that safety in a vehicle is a big issue. We spend loads of money on car seats and other items to keep your child safe and protected when traveling. Years of time and research has gone into promoting child safety in vehicles. Money and lots of effort have gone into designing and building car seats for kids that will protect them. But is your car seat safe enough, will it really protect your child. Not all seats are built the same. For example some companies only meet the minimum requirements while others like the Recaro Start seat are built well above the minimum safety standards. So is your child really safe in the seat you got them?

Now when it comes to the home front there are all kinds of devices designed to protect your child. You can find play pens that are designed to keep you child in a nice safe place away from other items. There are safety gates to keep children out of one place or another. You will discover outlet covers, these come in many sizes and shapes. Some are specially designed to prevent your child from choking on them as some children have died from choking on an outlet plug.

Consider food now for a minute. There are lots of food you know you should not feed a baby or toddler. Popcorn is one of those foods that is a big no no. You probably have not come to understand how deadly popcorn can be for your baby. In fact if death from popcorn was like death from a car accident then there would be laws requiring popcorn safety devices and such. That might sound odd but popcorn is that deadly. Even if you do not feed it to your child they can find that stray piece on the floor, under the edge of the counter or under the table. All it takes is one piece and those little husks that get in your teeth can collapse a child’s air way and it is near impossible to get it out. Think about it.

The Importance of Car Seats

April 6th, 2009, Posted in Babies

The biggest challenge for most parents is that most car injuries involving children occur since the child goes airborne during accidents. Even at very slow speeds, children are very likely to fly in the car if they are not properly secured. This can turn even the smallest incident into something fatal. This is the main reason we use car seats.

Children by their very nature are inquisitive and will probably touch anything that they can get their hands on. This unfortunately includes car locks and windows. A car seat will ensure that your child only has limited movement in the car. He may not happy but you can rest assured that you will not have doors and windows opening accidentally if you had forgotten to use the child lock feature.

Parents can also see the benefits of modern car seats. Most of them are easy to set up in the back seat. When you wish to move around for example visiting the doctor’s office or even the mall, all you have to do is use the handle on the car seat and carry the child with you. It is actually very easy to use the car seats as opposed to carrying the child as used to happen.

Though there are hundreds of car seat manufacturers, you have to seek quality when choosing amongst them. Other than quality, you should also consider the age of your child, ease of set up and the safety features. One of the best booster car seats available for the older child are the forward facing britax regent booster car seat.

You cannot underestimate the importance of car seats. Many injuries have been avoided by simply installing one. The good thing is that most countries have made their use mandatory. The only thing that you as a parent have to do is to choose the best quality and install it properly.

Child Safety means Using Car Seats

April 2nd, 2009, Posted in Babies

Child safety is the number one priority for each and every parent. We are spending more time in our cars from commuting to work to going shopping and child safety in a car is becoming a major issue of concern. It has been established that many child injuries during car accidents could have been averted if the child was safely tucked in a car seat.

Small infants cannot sit or hold their heads up well. This is one of the reasons that you should have them in a car seat that allows them to lie back comfortably. Infants should be placed in a rear facing car seat. The car seat must also be the right size.

It is your responsibility as a parent to acquaint yourself with the various types of car seats in the market. The choice for parents can seem daunting at first. Talk to your friends and even read up consumer reviews on the best car seats around. One of the best is the Britax Frontier booster.

Read the instructions on installing your car seat properly and make sure you understand and follow them. Many incidents with car seats occur due to improper installation. There is nothing wrong with seeking help from the manufacturer or retailer to make sure that you have the car seat properly installed.

Though there are hundreds of car seats out there, it is important to choose one that is approved by your state or country. Become acquainted with the various safety regulations and ensure that your chosen car seat follows them. Even a simple Google search should point you to the right direction on car seat requirements.

Lastly, you should never leave your child with anyone who does not know the importance of using car seats. Insist that they all know how to properly use a car seat. If you can take the time to teach the nanny how to cook your favourite food, then there should be time to teach them how to properly use a car seat.

My Child Can Not Stand The Car Seat!

April 2nd, 2009, Posted in Babies

It is times like this that make you want to just jump out of the automobile. It is bad enough that you are running behind for your appointment and fighting traffic. Now your boy is yelling as though they are being murdered and you have had all you can take. Is there anything you can do?

If you have gone through this kind of experience or are currently dealing with it you know how rough it is. You might be more fortunate then some if your child only rarely does this. Yet for some parents this occurs every time they go for a drive.

There are all kinds of theories for this but the bottom line is they are not happy. Some say it might be the vibrations or the sound bothering them. Other ideas are that they do not like the feel of the material or they feel trapped, ah, yes they are trapped.

How would you feel if you got dropped into a cold seat when it is near freezing or plopped down into a hot seat when the temperature is near one hundred degrees?

No matter what you need things to be different. You can definitely try anther car seat. You might consider this a bit much but how much to like the screaming? But, if you try another car seat it has to be one that is known for its comfort. A wonderful example of this are the Britax Decathlon car seat.

Before you do go buy another car seat you might consider this idea. Figure out some treat that your child really likes. Yes, even something sweet to eat. How, only give this to them when they are acting or behaving the way you want. In order for this to work you have to decide what behavior you want to reward. If it means you want to reward them for being quite for 15 seconds because that is all you can start with then so be it. Remember they only get this treat in response to your desired behavior and at no other time. You can gradually extent the time frame as they respond to the rewards.

Okay now some people might not like the reward idea for some reason. Some of you might even think this is strange but the truth is that all humans respond best to positive reinforcement or discipline rather then negative discipline which is often called punishment. So try this out and be sure to only reward the specific behavior you are after. With consistent effort on your part to quickly praise the child and give them the treat after they have produced the desired behavior will produce a change.

Try this simple approach before you try upgrading to a Britax Decathlon car seat. This technique will definitely help but do realize that there may be a real physical issue that is bothering your child and changing car seats may be just what needed.
