April 2nd, 2009, Posted in Babies

Usually, the baby's nursery is one of the tiniest rooms in the house.Lots of nurseries are adapted from home offices, sewing rooms, and even walk in closets!  There's nothing wrong with this, but it means you're working with a small, and frequently oddly shaped space. That means that the colors you pick and the furniture placed in it are of vital importance.  The wrong ones could result in a cramped, overwhelming space. The right ones will help the nursery feel cozy and welcoming.  However, the process of choosing nursery furniture doesn’t have to be a difficult one. Here are a some hints to ensure you end up choosing cute but practical nursery furniture that's just perfect for your child.

You'll need to start with a list of your basic requirements of the room.Usually cots or cribs are needed, as well as storage and changing space. You'll need to find out the size of the room and the nursery furniture you want to place.  Draw out a plan, taking into account the locations of built in wardrobes, radiators, windows, and the swing area of the door.  These obstacles can be real problems in your nursery if you don't think about them.  Too many people have been surprised by an obstacle in a place they needed to put storage or other furniture.

This will let you to figure out where your items will fit.  If you haven't bought your furniture yet, use an average from retailers to decide your placement.  You might even think about creating pieces of newspaper in the dimensions of your furniture and putting them on the floor in the correct locations. That will allow you to judge how much space is available and let you try moving around in it to see if things feel OK.You won't have the surprise that your furniture is too large or close together after you buy.

Don't forget not to go overboard when you're buying items for your new bundle of joy. It's very easy to get obsessed.Your infant will be using many of these items for only a short time, so it's a good idea to pay attention to your budget and your real needs.  Will you choose a cots or cot beds?  Is there a toddler bed available for when a cot is no longer needed?  How about the changing area?  Make sure you have enough space for storage, and that it's a comfortable height for changing your baby - you shouldn't have to lean over or stand in a strange position. You can even buy cot top changers - these fit over the top of a cot - to save space until your baby can roll over.

Moses baskets offer and provide a secure, comfortable and cozy sleeping environment so your baby can sleep well. Baskets can be made from wicker, which is the most expensive, or maize, but the majority are constructed from palm. You will find that wicker baskets have a tendency to last the longest. For your ease and comfort the baskets have handles so that you can move them with no trouble at all. These special style Moses baskets most often include a fabric-covered hood to protect the child and a set of moses baskets bedding. Many moses baskets have gender-neutral bedding options so you can buy in advance without knowing if you’re having a boy or a girl. Often, a foam mattress is already provided inside. Moses baskets make lovely newborn baby presents for new parents. Quite a few parents ask for a moses basket as a present for their newborn baby from parents and friends who join together to buy one. Many families have moses baskets which they share amongst the family for each new baby. Sharing baby items like this can cut down on the expense of a new baby.

Moses baskets can be placed on the floor or used at bed level through moses baskets stands.

{Cons

• Only used for the first three months or so: an expensive purchase if you buy new

Safety tip: Check when buying a Moses basket that its handles are sturdy and meet in the middle.

Pros

• Very portable: easy to move from room to room

• Your baby may feel more secure in a Moses basket than a cot
} You should carry the basket with two hands, one under the basket supporting the baby and one holding the handles together. If that is a concern for you, simply make sure to move it only after taking your baby out.

A tip for parents hoping to get their baby into the cot:  start putting the Moses Basket inside the cot after the baby has already gone to sleep.

How to Choose Nursery Curtains

March 15th, 2009, Posted in Babies

We know you are probably thinking “What in the world is the big deal about nursery curtains?" First of all, they are very important to consider. There are things that you would need to think about before making your decision about the types of nursery curtains that you would use in your baby's nursery.

The type of curtains that you consider should be well thought out whenever much of the nursery is finished. There are a few things to consider in the type of nursery curtains that you will choose.

First of all, we want the curtains to match the rest of the room, and probably the baby nursery bedding too. They don't have to be anything that is too fancy. However, if you have a little girl and the room is already girly, you want them to match the rest of the room. Color and design are important when you are trying to chose the best curtains for your nursery.

The other thing that you will wish to consider would be the thickness of the curtains. Are they thick enough to where you can't see anything through them? Are they preventing draughts from coming through during the winter months? These are questions that you want to ask before you make your final choice. We also are looking for a quality product so we can keep the same curtains all throughout the baby's childhood.

Something to consider is the length of the curtain. Whether you like it or not, the baby will get taller and will be able to reach the curtain to bring it down. That is of course, if we buy it a little too long. Don't forget that we want to keep these curtains for awhile. It is suggested to purchase curtains that are not too long so that the baby can't pull on them when he is learning to walk.

With the many choices in nursery curtains out there, we feel that we've covered the bases as far as the type of curtain to buy. Nursery decoration should feel homey for the baby and at the same time look attractive and be of good quality.

Tips for Choosing Baby Nursery Bedding

March 7th, 2009, Posted in Babies

It’s a good idea to begin planning for your baby nursery bedding even before your baby is born. To start with, don’t be misled by the argument that you cant plan for babys cot bedding if you dont know if its going to be a girl or a boy. Its true parents want different patterns, colours and designs for girl and boy babies. Please dont worry about this because there are many bedding choices and even nursery color options available in the market which are fine for both girls and boys.

It is easy for parents ” especially those choosing baby nursery bedding for the first time ” to worry about things that are of lesser importance than vital ones. Remember that while we adults spend an average of eight hours per day.e. twenty-four hours, in bed, baby spends almost all of the twenty-four hours in bed!

The first thing to consider is Safety. We often forget the simple fact that baby can’t say if it feels uncomfortable. We parents must be organised and make sure the baby bedding is safe from all aspects. For instance, it is untrue that very soft beds are most comfortable for baby. The bedding should be slightly firm. Also, desist from piling the crib with cuddly toys and pillows. Adults may find them lovely and colourful but not baby. These can turn into hazards because baby could accidentally suffocate. Keep the cot clear of all pillows and soft toys!

Tucking baby into a heavy blanket to keep cold draughts away is equally foolish. Babys movement can bring such blankets over its face and cause baby to over heat.

Next, plan to keep your babys nursery stocked with bedding essentials. Its hard to guess; But blankets and crib sheets sometimes have to be changed several times a day. Cotton sheets are best and I’ve already mentioned about using light blankets. My advice: check the thread count of the crib sheets you buy.

Our advice is to avoid plastic altogether including for baby comforters. Non-biodegradable material is a strict no-no for babys crib. These may spark allergies. The best thing is to use cotton as crib bedding.

Finally, you must ensure the durability of babys crib bedding. As you know, babys going to spend a lot of time in the cot. Apart from babys cot, plan the nursery well. This can contribute to baby growing up as a happy child.

Lets get back once more to babys crib. To recap, lets picture baby lying comfortably on a soft but firm mattress covered with cotton crib sheet and tucked into a lightweight yet warm blanket of pretty design ” not a plain pastel uni-color please! Babies don’t need a pillow and shouldn’t have one until they are over a year old. Similarly, don’t laden baby’s cot with soft toys of various shapes, sizes, and colors.

All done, you can be assured that your darling baby is enjoying a safe sleeptime.

Tips For Choosing Cot Bedding

February 6th, 2009, Posted in Babies

Cotton sheets and blankets are the traditional cot bedding choices for parents. This is because using cot blankets and cot sheets gives a parent the ability to keep their baby at the perfect temperature through adding or removing layers when needed. Some parents even choose to make their own cot sheets by cutting and sewing sheets from a regular adult sized bed if if they don't want to buy those made specifically for a cot. For parents who wish to buy cot bedding there are some fabulous choices which are easily available in stores and also online via the internet.

Remember that you should use specially sized sheets if you use a pram, carrycot or moses basket. These are smaller than normal cot-sized bedding. On the whole, you should start with approximately three blankets and four sheets. This number enables you to have enough spare sheets and blankets ready if you need to make a quick change. Sheets are generally made of the following different materials: traditional cotton, cotton jersey, brushed flannelette (which is warm to the touch), or stretch cotton terry. Stretchy fitted sheets are practical bedding additions because they are unlikely to come untucked during the night and are easy to remove on and off.

You can use acrylic cellular cot blankets, which wash well, rather than the cotton ones if your baby's bedroom is quite cool. You should always double-check if any traditional wool blankets you get can be washed in a machine . This is becasue you will find yourself washing your baby's cot bedding again and again and having dry clean only cot bedding would be extremely impractical.Snuggly fleece blankets, which are made with polyester, are also a popular choice and can be used in prams and buggies during colder weather, but be careful if you use them in the house as they can become too warm.
