Why Should You Use Beeswax Candles?

November 12th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

The beeswax candles are currently at the very top in the candles world. There are good reasons why these candles are so pricey. They are also one of the cleanest candles you are able to find right now.

There are three different candle competitors that beeswax candles are competing with: paraffin candles, soy candles and gel candles. The competitors are generally less expensive and also of lower quality.

Beeswax candles are made from wax collected from bee hives by commercial bee farmers. To prepare the candle making process, the beeswax itself is being processed and purified. The purification process includes heating the wax in hot water.

You will be able to find many different forms and shapes of these candles, as well as finding unscented and scented types. One of the reasons why beeswax candles are considered top-of-the-line is their burning characteristics. The difference is that some other candles do not emit such a powerful yellow color and burn with such warm flames.

There is only a small amount of wax dripping from a beeswax candles.

This characteristic makes these candles very desirable for use in religious services. There are many institutions that use candles heavily, like Catholic Church does during their services. It would make a real mess if those candles were dripping a lot of wax.

And they handle this problem by choosing only beeswax candles, since they do not drip wax at all. One more good news about beeswax candles is that they do not produce a lot of smoke. They are quite clean burning candles, to tell it in the other way. This characteristic makes them desirable candles to burn with children in the home and also generally to protect your family’s respiratory systems.

With these candles you won’t have such problems as bad petroleum smell that you usually get with paraffin candles and you won’t have problems with darks spots on your ceiling or your walls due to the soot.

Even though the beeswax candles are more expensive due to the labor involved during the farming process, their benefits make them worth the additional expense.

Sports Collecting is a Rewarding Hobby

October 28th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

Sports collecting is a hobby that can fill your time with interest and offer a diversion to your everyday life. A sports collecting hobby is a relaxing and rewarding pastime. Sports collecting takes many forms depending on the person who is pursuing the hobby. Many people choose to collect memorabilia from their favorite professional teams, but others collect items related to a specific sport such as golf, fishing, and other recreational sports. Sports collectors have to be able to improvise ways of storing their items, especially since some sports items occupy quite an amount of space.

If you have a favorite pro team or two there are many items you can collect related to those teams. Scrapbooking is great for collectors. For instance, you can create scrapbooks in which you save clippings about exciting games, favorite players, and special interviews. You can keep ticket stubs and photographs in your scrapbook. Other items, however, won’t fit into a scrapbook, such as a game ball, team jersey, or a team’s annual yearbook. These items will need other storage. Stands make great storage for special balls, as do hanging jerseys on a wall hanger.

You might like to collect souvenir items from all types of sports. Small metal pins with insignias on them are sold by many professional teams. One type of sports collecting that is very popular is collecting pins, such as those sold at the Olympics. Another option for sports collecting is to collect antique sports equipment. Vintage baseball gloves are an example of this type of collectible.

Among the most collectible items are sports cards. Sports collecting enthusiasts have collected sporting cards for years and the first were the baseball cards. This is such a popular hobby that some cards are worth a lot of money, such as a rookie card of a player.

People who play a particular sport themselves usually want to collect items that symbolize this sport in their own homes and offices. Collecting items decorated with fish, horses, or golfers are examples of these types of collections. If you enjoy hunting with dogs you may decide to decorate your home in a hunting dog theme.

The same can be done around the theme of golf, horseback riding, whether western or eastern, bass fishing, sailboats, and other popular recreation sports. Sports can be more than a physical activity, it can also be a collector’s hobby.

Sports collecting is one of those profitable hobbies that anyone can develop simply and easily, as well as reap financial rewards if they so desire.

Creative and a Pack Rat? Make Your Own Classic Movie Poster

October 26th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

When unpacking in my new apartment, I realized that I do not like to throw anything out. Old newspapers, magazines and postcards are all included. I decided that instead of decorating my walls with prints, I would make my own classic movie poster. It’s an excellent way to clean out the clutter in your house, as well as a way to show your creativity.

Anything Goes When Making a Classic Movie Poster

There are lots of different ways one could make a classic movie poster. At Chicago’s Halsted Market Days, a local artist was framing record album covers using soundtracks of films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s or An American in Paris. Because it’s very inexpensive and easy to do, this is a great way to make a classic movie poster. Go to the local used record shop where you can buy records for less than $5. For less than $30, you can buy an inexpensive, but nice-looking frame at a drugstore.

Another way of making a classic movie poster that involves actual work is making a collage. A collage is a great way to get rid of a lot of old magazines and newspapers. Because most of the material you already have at home, this is again, a very inexpensive project. You’ll only have to buy a poster board and a frame. You could also use covers from VHS tapes, DVD’s or CD’s, along with magazines and newspapers clippings.

Use Your Imagination, but Remember People Have to Look at it

The only “danger” in making a classic movie poster on your own is that it might end up looking like a kindergartner’s art project from school. While beauty is subjective, and in the end, you have to put together what you like, there are tips for making your poster presentable and tasteful.

Having a theme is a great start. This theme could be a color scheme – using only black & white photographs will give the poster an old Hollywood glamour feel. You can also concentrate on one star, or even better have some sort of general theme in mind. My poster featured film stars of the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Another good idea would be to have shots of famous pairs – Bogie and Bacall, Spencer and Hepburn, Fred and Ginger. You can also have a classic movie poster featuring famous screen clowns like Charlie Chaplin, Abbot and Costello, or Laurel and Hardy.

Reflecting your taste and what you believe to be classic film is the most important thing to remember when making this poster. As long as you put your creativity into it, any movie poster will look like a classic and don’t be worried if your poster reflects Shaft more than it does Casablanca.

Making your own classic movie poster is an excellent way to clean out the clutter in your house, as well as a way to show your creativity…View more articles at www.posters.jsgenterprises.com.

Facts About Scissors and Shears

October 24th, 2008, Posted in Hobbies

When sewing, it’s a necessity to have some scissors. In fact, even if you aren’t doing any sewing, every household needs some scissors! Because they’re a useful tool, it’s important to have at least one pair.

Scissors vs. Shears

First off, though people often use the names interchangeably, scissors and shears aren’t really the same thing and are meant to perform different tasks. Scissors are best used for lighter cutting jobs such as trimming or clipping threads, while shears are used for the heavier cutting jobs.

Shears Are Strong.

A pair of shears generally measures about 6 inches or more in length. The shears are held by putting your thumb through the smaller ring handle, and inserting two or three fingers through the larger ring handle. Holding the shears by placing your fingers through these rings gives better leverage to perform the heavier tasks for which shears excel

Scissors Are Smaller.

Scissors are anywhere from 6 inches long down to 3 inches or even less. Besides scissors being smaller than shears, they also have handle rings that are of equal size.

Choosing Quality Scissors and Shears.

Most scissors are made of steel. Two main types of steel are used to manufacture scissors. Carbon steel, the first type, is used to make scissors with the blade and the handle formed in one continuous piece. This kind of steel is very strong and stay sharp. Scissors made from carbon steel are usually plated with chromium or nickel to prevent them from rusting.

Stainless steel is the other kind of steel used to make shears and scissors. A plastic handle is usually fitted to the metal blade. Stainless steel scissors don’t retain a sharp edge as long, and aren’t as sturdy. Once dull, they’re also harder to re-sharpen. However, they are generally much cheaper than their carbon steel counterparts.

Various Types of Scissors And Shears.

There’s a wide variety of scissors and shears available. Here’s a small sampling:

  • Applique Scissors: Offset for level cutting
  • Bent Handle Dressmaker Shears: Allow the cutting blades to rest flat on the table
  • Easy Grip Scissors: With larger handles for those having difficulty holding scissors
  • Embroidery Scissors: Used for cutting embroider threads
  • Finishing Shears: Either as pinking or scalloping shears, used to cut ravel-resistant seams
  • Heavy-duty Shears: For cutting leather, upholstery, drapery, etc.
  • Thread Snipping Scissors: For cutting loose threads off sewing

There are also shears made for left-handed people, household scissors (all-purpose, poultry shears, etc.), scrapbooking scissors, electric scissors, paper scissors for childrne and more.

Whatever you need cut, some kind of shears or scissors are just right for the job.

Care of Scissors and Shears.

The main rule of scissors and shears: Don’t use them for anything but the materials for which they were designed.

Positively do NOT use shears meant for cutting fabrid on household task like cutting paper. If you use shears or scissors for something other than the materials they were intended to cut, that will dull the blades.

Keep shears and scissors dry and dust free, and occasionally oil them at the hinge screw. Keeping scissors and shears in a safe place like a sewing basket, or with higher quality cutting instruments, the box they came in, will help protect the points. Also, scissors should be stored in a closed position. Setting down scissors in an open position is a fast way to dull the blades.

High quality scissors and shears can be re-conditioned by the manufacturers or other companies providing that service. This resharpens the scissors good as new.

That’s The Story On Shears And Scissors.

For everyday use, cheaper shears and scissors are fine. It’s a simple matter to replace cheap scissors or shears if they are broken or become dull. A good set of shears is a wise investment for cutting fabric and other sewing chores.

Taking good care of your scissors and shears will keep them in top shape. They’ll reward you by easily cutting through materials.  That will make your sewing a shear pleasure.
